Just in time for St Patrick’s Day, Chesapeake Cigar brings you the limited edition Alec Bradley Black Market Filthy Hooligan Barberpole 2016!

“This year, I wanted to create a totally different version of the Filthy Hooligan,” said Alan Rubin, president of Alec Bradley, “The 2016 blend will have a much wider appeal, and those who loved the two previous versions will not be disappointed; this is no ordinary candela.”

The cigar is a Toro measuring 6 x 50. Just 2,000 boxes are being produced, each holding 22 cigars.

Borrowing from the standard Black Market blend, the Filthy Hooligan uses a slightly modified version that features an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder on top of Honduran and Panamanian fillers. The resulting flavor is described by the company as being a medium-bodied, full-flavored smoke that explodes on the palate with sweet tobacco flavors countered by the brawnier core leaves, like a good Irish stout.

Green cigars are fairly rare today, but they once were the preferred smokes of Americans, so popular in the United States that cigars with candela wrappers became known as American Market Selection. (Natural cigars, the ones that make up the vast majority of today’s cigar market, were dubbed English Market Selection.) From about 1958 to the early 1970s, Americans smoked billions of cigars, and nearly all of them were as green as your front lawn after a May rain. The popular tint was not a function of the use of underage leaf, however. It resulted from the unique process which was used to cure the wrapper leaf. In the early 1970’s, there was a gradual transition to today’s most popular wrapper leaf — the creamy Connecticut shade grown.

“The unique flavor of a candela wrapper is something that every cigar smoker should experience at least once,” Rubin noted. ”Add the dark Jalapa wrapper, and it’s not only more flavorful, but the barber pole form can also be very appealing, visually.”
