Mark Irwin at Peterson Pipe Notes is spearheading a project to restore the burial site of Charles Peterson. Peterson died while on a trip to Hamburg, Germany and was buried in the town’s Ohlsdorf Cemetery Park. According to reliable research, Charles Peterson never had a proper grave marker.
Correcting this historical oversight, Irwin is gathering the greater Peterson Pipe Community to raise the needed funds to have Peterson’s remains moved to a portion of the cemetery where an appropriate memorial marker can be displayed in perpetuity.
Time is of the essence in this effort, due to the limited time period (November through February) where German law allows remains to be exhumed and re-buried. The budget to move Peterson to a place of honor at the cemetery, “takes into account a new plot lease, exhumation and reinterment, the administrative reburial request fee, transport of the coffin, the monument, in perpetuity maintenance, and a contingency buffer.” The fundraising goal is $17,367. The funding deadline to make this project work is the end of January, 2027.
