Sutliff and Cornell & Diehl released some special pipe tobaccos Tuesday, August 13th. Both tobaccos are highly anticipated and we expect them to sell out quickly.
Sutliff Silver Quarter 175th Anniversary Blend #2
1.75 oz Tin
Reflecting on Sutliff’s 175 years of tobacco excellence, the company came across a brand that embodies true value, SILVER QUARTER. This name pays homage to Sutliff’s roots, the legacy of two brothers who popularized pipe smoking in the burgeoning mining society of San Francisco. Sutliff celebrates this heritage with a coin cut composed of the finest African Virginias, complemented by a core of Perique and Black Cavendish.
Expect layers and layers of flavors with African Virginia’s bringing notes of citrus, dark stone fruit, earth, wood and floralness, while the medallion flake’s core of Perique and Black Cavendish offer creamy and sugary tones with prune and a touch of spice.
The tobacco from a freshly opened tin has a humidity level of about 88%, making it a little moist and sticky. Some drying is in order if you wish to reduce the chance of wet residue in the pipe and moisture driven tongue bite. My experience is that it’s important to rub-out each bowl full in close proportion to the percentages represented in each medallion fresh from the tin.
Cornell & Diehl Sun Bear 2024
2 oz Tin
Sun Bear is released annually, and the Honey varietal is essential to its character. Black Locust Honey was last employed in the blend in the incredibly popular 2021 release, when Victor Seested, a pipe-smoking Maryland Beekeeper, provided the rare Black Locust Honey — a variety prized for its small yields, extremely light color, and delicate sweetness.. Victor has again furnished the Honey, which is ethically sourced from the Spring, 2024 pollination period, and 2024’s Sun Bear is virtually the same as in 2021. (Anticipating demand, C&D upped production from 10,000 tins in 2021 to 20,000 this year.)
Cornell & Diehl’s 2024 Sun Bear: Black Locust is a blend of the finest Bright and Red Virginias balanced by 2014 Basma and 2013 Izmir, the tobaccos are cased with a whisper of Silver Tequila and Elderflower, the natural Black Locust Honey complements these specially selected varietal tobaccos, elevating their fruity and floral notes for a bright, refreshing character and a creamy, rounded finish.
Upon opening the tin, you’re initially greeted by the pleasant scent of fermented fig. After a second sniff, you can definitely smell the aroma of the Elderflower. Cut in loose flakes, the tobacco has a humidity level right around 70%, making Sun Bear quick to prepare and smoke.
