TAKEN FROM THE DEVIL’S HAND DARK COROJO BY ESTEBAN CARRERAS

I love cigars that have a backstory and this one is HUGE!

Taken From The Devil’s Hand, or Devil’s Hand for those that like brevity, has a fascinating backstory about its tobacco. Gonzalo Puentes, who runs Esteban Carreras’ factory, once worked for Cuba’s Ministry of Agriculture, and in particular the group responsible for tobacco production. As the story is told, Puentes and his colleagues were tasked with developing improved corojo seeds. Using a process called “positive selection”, the group started with a relatively large pool of corojo tobacco plants. From that pool, they selected the strongest, tallest, most robust plants. They then took seeds from the most remarkable plants and started the process over, and over, and over. At the end, they had selected the best plants and, over several plant growing generations, they had sucessfully bred better corojo tobacco.

When the study group felt they had achieved their goal, they were supposed to hand over their results — along with the precious seeds from the best of the best plants — for introduction into the pool of corojo seeds used for growing Cuba’s “famous” cigar tobacco.

Except instead of giving the best seeds to the Cuban government, they were kept and smuggled out of the country to Ecuador and Nicaragua, while less desirable seeds were handed over to the 90’s era Castro Government. Thus, they had taken the crop from the DEVIL HANDS — Fidel Castro — and his regime. AND! They left the Cuban cigar business with lower quality corojo for years to come.

This cigar features the resulting wrapper tobacco, grown in Nicaragua, that comes from these smuggled seeds. In a way, with each puff on a Devil’s Hands cigar, you’re putting it to the Castros and their cronies. SCORE ONE FOR FREEDOM!
