DR. PERL FILTERS – FILTER PRODUCTS FOR PIPES, ROLL-YOUR-OWN AND CIGARETTES/ CIGAR HOLDERS FOR OVER 100 YEARS

Dr. Jacques Perl, a chemist from Berlin, researched and revolutionised the filtration of tobacco smoke for VAUEN and at the same time gave his name to a brand that was soon quite literally “on everyone’s lips”. In 1921, “Dr. Perl” was registered as a trademark at the German Imperial Patent Office. It all started with a pure paper filter, which promised high absorbency and effective reduction of harmful substance due to its multi-layered filter paper. It came in three different sizes, including already 9mm and 6mm filters. This made VAUEN one of the first manufacturers to equip pipes with a stem bore especially for filters.

Continuous research and constant further development led to another milestone in VAUEN’s company history in 1934: The Dr. Perl junior 9mm activated charcoal filter soon saw the light of day. It was the world’s first activated charcoal filter for reducing harmful substances in tobacco smoke. The activated carbon filters harmful substances, nicotine and tar out of the smoke even more effectively. For 20 years, VAUEN held the world-wide patent for this exceptional product. Initially sneered at by other pipe manufacturers, this groundbreaking innovation was soon recognised as a real asset for the tobacco industry. This eventually led to most pipe manufacturers additionally or exclusively switching to pipes with 9mm filter bores. With this invention, VAUEN also set a far-reaching and worldwide trend in motion. Over 95% of all German pipe-lovers now smoke with activated charcoal filters. The effective filtration and the dry, cool smoking experience of the Dr. Perl junior filter made it the best-selling 9mm activated charcoal filter worldwide. Pipe smokers are not the only ones who appreciate the original. Over the last 25 years, VAUEN has also built up a large fan community in the roll-your-own (RYO) sector and among alternative smokers.

To complement to the Dr. Perl junior 9mm activated charcoal filter, the new Dr. Perl Junior 6mm activated charcoal filter line was launched in 2021. For this new filter, ceramic caps with a special pore structure were developed which support the entire filtration process.

THE CONEX SYSTEM

To further optimise filtration performance, VAUEN has equipped all of its pipe models since 1968 with its special Conex system. A tapered sleeve in the mouthpiece of the pipe allows the filter to fit snugly and prevents the smoke from flowing past. Yet another trend-setting invention from VAUEN to meet the high demands of true pipe enthusiasts. In addition to the 9mm pipes, the “SIX” 6mm pipes are also equipped with the VAUEN Conex system.

THE RIGHT CONTENT – QUALITY IN EVERY RESPECT

Dr. Perl Junior activated charcoal filters are characterised by a high-grade filtration effect, which can only be achieved with a sufficiently dense activated charcoal filling and just the right quality of activated carbon. So how can you assess the performance of a filter if you can’t see it? The difference lies in the following details: The more densely a filter is filled with activated carbon pellets, the more “detours” the smoke has to take via the pollutant-absorbing pores in the activated carbon in order to pass through the filter. In other words, the more pores the carbon pellets have, the better the filtration. However, if the filter is filled with less carbon and is therefore more “airy”, the smoke can simply flow through unhindered. The draw resistance is lower, but so is the absorbing effect.

VAUEN leaves nothing to chance when it comes to the activated carbon used in Dr. Perl Junior filters: Over many years of research, a particularly highly activated carbon with an excellent quality was developed exclusively for VAUEN. A special process using steam creates countless pores of different sizes in the pieces of carbon. The higher the number of pores, the better the filtration performance. However, only the optimal ratio of “primary and secondary routes” ensures the highest-possible retention of nicotine and tar particles. A look through the microscope shows the “craters”, “caves” and “channels” of the individual activated carbon pieces that the smoke now has to flow through. These ‘catch’ a large amount of the nicotine and tar.
The longer the tobacco smoke remains in this labyrinth of activated carbon, the greater the filtering effect. The white, chlorine-free bleached filter paper and the white, heat resistant ceramic caps of the filter also prevent annoying moisture build-up due to their excellent absorbency. At the same time, the large number of holes in the caps ensures an even distribution of the smoke flow to the activated charcoal pieces and the ideal utilisation of the combined filter effect of charcoal and paper.
