HU Tobacco’s Director’s Cut definitely harkens back to tobacco blend preparation of the past. In former times, tobacco was spun into an endless rope and then sliced to order into smaller portions, increasing portability and durability. With more modern packaging, vintage inspired rope-style production now occurs to improve the taste of the blended tobaccos.
Director’s Cut begins with a traditional Virginia / Perique Curly Cut rope, thinly sliced into small bullseye flakes they like to call “Curlies.” The very expressive and sweet Virginia grades in connection with a strong Perique core, make an interesting blend, together with lovely Burley grades and sugary Virginia Loose Cut. Finialy, they add just a touch of fire-cured Virginia to bring the entire blend together. The result is a slightly sweet and spicy blend, layered with tremendous varieties in taste. The Director’s Cut is attractive for those who are looking for the very special taste adventure. …strong, spicy, multi-layered.
Upon opening the 100g tin, the tobacco comes at about 75% humidity, a little high for immediate smoking. Rubbing out a serving takes a little more effort as the tin contains multiple components with different cuts — slices of Curly Cut rope, strands of Virginia Loose Cut and ribbons of Burley and fire-cured Virginia.
I found attacking the “Curlies” first, by tearing and rubbing them into the pile of loose / ribbon cuts, then thoroughly hand mixing the tobacco works best. Expect each batch of prepared tobacco to be a slightly different experience as a result.
