Tobacco Varieties Used: Katerini Perique, Red & Stoved Virginias, Burley
Crumble Cake- This blend contains the unique Katerini Perique which inspired the creation of the Birds Of A Feather series. Very few pipe smokers have heard about this tobacco, and with good reason. Sutliff is the only pipe tobacco blender who has this tobacco.
Katerini tobacco is an oriental tobacco growing on the mainland in Greece. For the first time in history, the Katerini leaf was taken to St. James Parish, Louisiana and was fermented after the original Perique recipe and process, the result is sublime!
Katerini Perique has a lighter taste than standard Perique and it developed a deep raisin / dried plum taste. The special Perique is blended with a Red Virginia and fair amount of stoved Virginia Cavendish. For the sake of balance, a touch of high-grade Burley is added. Anomalous is a blend with lots of Virginia sweetness and unique raisin / dried plum taste, thanks to the inclusion of the one of a kind Katerini Perique.
SMOKING NOTES 3/9/23:
Opening the fresh tin, you’re greeted with the aroma of sweet raisin and vanilla. The freshly opened tobacco clocks in at about 90% humidity, so crumble the thick cut slices and let it air out for a bit before packing your pipe. It’s smooth and sweet from the first puff, with subtle hints of raisin coming from the Katerina Perique, just as described. I think it’s outstanding now and I think that some cellar time will just make it better.
