A Celebration 128 Years in the Making

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, Chesapeake Pipe & Cigar is proud to host the first-ever Peterson System Day Celebration & Meet-Up event hosted in historic Annapolis, Maryland. This is a full-day dedicated to one of the most ingenious and enduring pipe designs ever created.

The date is no accident.

For Peterson enthusiasts around the world, September 3rd marks the anniversary of Charles Peterson’s third and final System Pipe patent, awarded in 1898 and completing a decade-long quest to create a cooler, drier, more comfortable smoke. Since 2020, thanks to the efforts of Mark Irwin and PetersonPipeNotes.org, Peterson devotees have gathered online annually to celebrate the invention that changed pipe smoking forever.

The Three Patents That Built a Legend

The Peterson System wasn’t born in a single flash of inspiration. It evolved through three groundbreaking patents that transformed the pipe smoking experience.

In 1890, Peterson introduced the famous moisture reservoir, designed to keep condensation where it belonged:

“Keep the moisture in the pipe, not in the smoker’s mouth.”

In 1894 came the graduated bore stem:

“Slow the smoke down so the System can do its work.”

Then, on September 3, 1898, Peterson completed the System with the now-iconic P-Lip mouthpiece:

“Move the smoke away from the tongue.”

Together, these innovations can be summed up in three simple phrases:

Collect the moisture.

Slow the smoke.

Redirect it away from the tongue.

Nearly 128 years later, Peterson smokers around the world are still benefiting from Charles Peterson’s remarkable vision.

Peterson Trunk Show

Throughout the day, we’ll be hosting a special Peterson Trunk Show in partnership with Peterson’s U.S. distributor, Laudisi.

Explore an incredible selection of Peterson pipes, including System and Deluxe System models, and spend the day surrounded by fellow enthusiasts who appreciate the history, craftsmanship, and engineering behind Ireland’s most famous pipe maker.

Peterson Prize Drawings

We’ll be conducting prize drawings throughout the day featuring unique Peterson-themed giveaways and collectibles.

Some prizes are still being finalized, but trust us… you’ll want your name in the hat.

System Pipe Workshop

6:30 PM

At 6:30 PM we’ll gather for an in-depth System Pipe workshop where we’ll dive into the details that make the Peterson System unlike any other pipe ever made.

Topics will include:

• How the System and Deluxe System designs function
• Packing and smoking techniques recommended by Charles Peterson himself
• Proper cleaning and maintenance procedures
• Getting the most enjoyment from your Peterson System Pipe

Whether you’ve owned Petersons for decades or just picked up your first System Pipe, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the design that started it all.

Pete Geeks Worldwide Welcome

We know not everyone can make the trip to Annapolis.

That’s why we’re developing a live Zoom broadcast so Peterson fans from around the world can participate in the celebration, join the workshop, and share in the camaraderie — Because Peterson System Day shouldn’t be limited by geography.
